Project Description:

The Pacific Motorway (M1): Watland Street to Sports Drive Upgrade was part of a broader program to improve capacity and efficiency on one of Queensland’s busiest transport corridors. This 3.5-kilometre upgrade included major enhancements to the M1, South East Busway, and V1 Veloway to improve connectivity, reduce congestion, and enhance safety for motorists, cyclists, and public transport users.

Key project features included widening of the M1 to four lanes in both directions, extension of the South East Busway to Springwood, a new M1 on-ramp at Lexington Road, and construction of nine new bridges —including a 950-metre elevated Veloway structure over Springwood, Lexington and Logan roads. Smart Motorways technology is also featured throughout this section of M1 to improve traffic flow and reduce travel times.

The upgrade was part of Stage 2 of the Pacific Motorway, Eight Mile Plains to Daisy Hill Upgrade, a significant infrastructure investment funded by the Australian and Queensland governments.

Our Role:

Construction Sciences provided construction materials testing, geotechnical engineering, and environmental testing for this project during the construction phase. The Brisbane South (Kingston) Laboratory ensured quality and compliance across all phases, including geotechnical investigations, environmental testing, and materials testing for earthworks, pavements, structural concrete, and drainage. With over 200,000 cubic metres of earthworks, 40,000 cubic metres of concrete, and 110,000 tonnes of asphalt, rigorous testing was critical to ensure the motorway’s long-term durability and safety.
