Each year Construction Sciences looks to recognise overall stand-out employees with the Golden Shovel Award. Recipients have the opportunity to travel to the US and Canada to work with partner companies Raba Kistner and T2ue for one week.
This years recipients for the award were Peter Sagner from the Geotechnical Engineering team in South East Queensland, and Mathew Tyrrell from the Gold Coast Management team.
“Peter has been a Geotechnical Engineer with Construction Sciences since 2019 and has consistently met and exceeded expectations as an undergraduate geotechnical engineer, a graduate geotechnical engineer, and now a young geotechnical engineer” says Team Leader David Longden. “He has worked hard with other team members to build and expand on our pavement investigation and bridge deck investigation services. Peter has worked hard to coordinate not just his projects but projects being run by more junior engineers to ensure completion and adequate support throughout.”
“Peter moved to our Sunshine Coast office in 2021 and has done a great job building our reputation both with Council clients and Tier 1 contractors in the area. Specifically, he has worked consistently to ensure our reputation in this field has been met and surpassed. Peter has worked hard to develop new relationships with prospective clients, and helped to strengthen existing ones. This hard work and consistency has resulted in the award of multiple large pavement investigation and bridge deck investigation work packages and good client feedback.”
“All around Peter is a very hard worker and has been consistently pushing the boundary for us in both business development and project fulfilment. As a clear communicator and good project manager I think he would be a great ambassador for Construction Sciences as we try to expand our relationships within the Intega company network.”

Laboratory Manager Mathew Tyrrell is in his 18th year with the company. Having started with the Gold Coast laboratory as a young trainee, he soon completed his Construction Materials Testing apprenticeship. He then followed a classic CMT career path, starting in a base laboratory working on local works, and progressing to managing small TMR works. From there, he worked on site laboratory projects before stepping up to Gold Coast laboratory manager in late 2018.
“If we look at the figures for the last few years we see his influence, which is constant improvement to the business,” says SEQ/NZ Area Manager Chris Pearce.
“Mathew has surrounded himself with quality people and delivers quality product. He has managed the most growth of any Australian branch and is by no means of slowing down. He’s a good guy, well liked and delivers results. A player of the present and future and a good example of professionalism. He has my vote.”
The international experience is an opportunity to gain exposure to some of the largest civil infrastructure markets in the US and Canada, whilst networking with like-minded industry professionals, and building knowledge of innovative industry practices.
